About Stu
Strange story...I spent most of my 20's and 30's as a welder before returning to school to become a math teacher. As you can imagine, that was a struggle!
In the end it was a blessing, though. My struggles along with my hands on experience of using mathematics in the welding trade allowed me to see the struggles and frustrations in my students. I taught 9th-12th grade pre algebra, algebra, and geometry for ten years before retiring and excelled at teaching those subjects to students.
No one is a "non-mathematical" thinker. Some aren't quite ready to make the transition from concrete thinking to the abstract thinking needed, but they all get there with time.
I happen to get that time to move more quickly.
As mentioned before, I think the three aspects that converge to make me a good tutor are:
1. Years spend using math as a welder. I can relate the hands on experience and concepts to a non-traditional, vocational student's experience.
2. Returning to college in my forties to study math. I want to assure you my struggles to learn mathematics match yours.
3. Ten years of actually teaching students, and learning different methods to reach each and every student.
