About Troy

First, a little story about myself. As a student, I always struggled with the subject of math. I was a regular C and D student until 7th grade, when I had the teacher that completely changed my view of math. Through her, I learned and experienced applications of the subject first hand to realize it was more than just black text on white paper.

Despite many career paths that flashed through my mind and actually changing my initial major in college, I knew math was the one that I was meant to pursue. I never thought that I would be a researcher, a teacher, a tutor and an expert in math but I am. It was all thanks to all the supportive teachers that I had over the years.

I want to pass on that epithany moment that I felt so many times over the years to new students. I want to show students that math (and the STEM field as a whole) is something that is approachable, not intimidating. Even if students don't go into STEM fields, at least they'll get a better understanding of logic and reasoning which we all need in order to face the word, to seperate fact from fiction. There is nothing I can do to thank the wonderful teachers/instructors/professors that I had in the past but I want to pass on that gift to all of you.

As for my qualifications: I have been tutoring for the last 12 years privately and for the community college I work for and for the schools that I've attended. I hold a bachleor's degree from Marietta College (2012) and a master's degree from John Carroll University (2014). I am currently finishing up a Ph.D. at Case Western Reserve University where my field of research is differential geometry (think of the marriage of calculus and geometry). I have also taught courses in math in the past, from precalculus to linear algebra. But most importantly, I love the subject and I can't help but to promote it!

Definitely the social aspect of it and also, I get to talk about something that I absolutely enjoy! It's so much fun explaining math to students and seeing those gears going in their heads. But the best part is when they get that light bulb moment when everything just makes sense!

About the lesson

I first like to chat with them. Not about math but about themselves. I enjoy learning more about the student as a person opposed to just a client. This way, I can gain a better perspective as to what type of person the student is and how I can relate the material to them. I find it to be much easier to relate mathematical concepts to things they recognize opposed to abstractions.
