About Nick

Over time, I've found that students perform much better when they are taught the fundamental concepts in a conversational, friendly way. I prefer to cater to individual learning styles, emphasizing real-world examples and problems wherever possible. Additionally, helping student to improve their study techniques and time management serves to help them maintain and extend the progress they make from our work together.

The enjoyment I draw from teaching is rooted in helping students build cognitive tools that they'll be able to take forward and use throughout their academic and professional careers. Math does not need to be scary, or embarassing...or even difficult. With committment and the proper approach, most anyone can improve their mathematical understanding.

I began tutoring and teaching as an undergaduate student, progressing through graduate school as a teaching assistant and then an adjunct instructor. Throughout that time, I have always maintained a few students that I work with; teaching is both a skill and a passion of mine.

I have a masters degree in mathematics and have been tutoring students of all ages in mathematis for nearly 20 years; for the past 7 years, I have done work both as a private tutor and at Sylvan Learning Centers. Additionally, I have spent time teaching mathematics at the university level. When I'm not tutoring, I work as a software engineer.

About the lesson

I usually take the first session to get a feel for the student's personality, their current challenges, and their strengths. After this, I will guide them through a progression of examples, techniques, and concepts in subsequent sessions to improve both their understanding and confidence with the material.

I have worked wiht students ranging from kindergarten all the way to adults returning to college and graduate students. From all walks of like, at any stage in their education, I believe students can improve their math skills through better understanding of fundamental concepts and tangible examples.

Details

Individual sessions are $25/hour. Blocks of 5 or more sessions can be purchased at $20/hr. (Block pricing is non-refundable, cancellations or rescheduling must be given 24 hours in advance).
