About Joshua

Hi I'm Josh. I'm currently a graduate student at Dartmouth College studying to get my PhD in Organic Synthetic Chemistry. I received my BA in Chemistry with a concentration in Biochemistry from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA. I've been tutoring and teaching for over 5 years now, both in group settings (ranging from 5-40 students) as well as 1 on 1 sessions. I have always been passionate about teaching and helping others, especially in fields that excite me. Tutoring has always been a rewarding experience for me. I have tutored numerous subjects, from math and english to beginner and advanced Chemistry. The joy on my students faces when understanding a concept or the student excitedly telling me they scored higher on their exam never fails to make my day!

I started teaching as a tutor in college and continued through my graduate career.

I received my bachelor’s from the Honors Chemistry program at the College of the Holy Cross. I am continuing my studies as a PhD student at Dartmouth College. I have taught high school students intermediate and AP chemistry for 2 years and I have taught at the college level (at both Holy Cross as well as Dartmouth College) for the past 3 years.

About the lesson

Typically, I will meet with the student or the parent individually and discuss areas in which we can work on together. I may ask to see the student's syllabus so that I can plan worksheets, problems and additional help ahead of time. Once we determine the right course of action, we will have meetings in which we can review old material to strengthen a strong foundation, as well as starting to work through material the student is currently learning in class.

My students have many different backgrounds, I have taught Ivy-League undergraduates, high school students, and middle school students in inner cities.

I would suggest looking for a tutor with excellent qualifications. Chemistry is notorious for being a tricky subject that takes time and practice to master. Picking a tutor that is patient and will make your learning a priority can make all the difference in the world.

Recently I taught a class of 40 undergraduate organic chemistry students. A number of the students struggled with certain concepts of stereochemistry. Helping these students individually with one on one sessions helped the students ace their next exam. The next time I met with each of these students, I could tell from the pure joy on their faces they were just as excited in learning chemistry as I am.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should briefly reflect on what areas they are struggling with the most in the class. This can help both the tutor and the student pinpoint exactly how to advance the student's learning.
