About Arielle

I've spent the last decade in various kid-related jobs, from substitute teaching to running birthday parties, from a science museum to a tutoring center. I'm certified in NJ to teach K-5 and middle school math, and my bachelor's degree is in visual arts. I'm a small business owner and artist with ADHD, so I'm great at finding creative solutions and working with all sorts of learning styles. I prefer working one-on-one than with a giant class, which is why I'm looking to help out kids who may be having a tough time in math (up to and including Algebra I) or with grammar.

I love finding that "Oh! I get it now!" moment. I know math can be scary sometimes, and it's really common for kids (and, let's be real, adults!) to get frustrated, which only makes it harder for things to sink in. I love trying to find new ways to make things make sense -- should we think about fractions as a pizza or as bags of toys? Instead of getting frustrated, I like to just try a different route! People think math is rigid and unmoving, but there are so many different ways to think about the various concepts, we can always find the way that clicks!

My childhood "What do you want to be when you grow up?" answer always alternated between "a teacher!" and "an artist!" and I've kind of spent my whole life working toward both. I discovered that the formal education system isn't where I want to be, but that informal teaching still brings me great joy. I currently run my own small business selling my art, but I still want to help tutor kids, too.

I spent some time a substitute teacher and I'm certified to teach K-5 and middle school math. I also worked as a tutor throughout college. I have several years of both formal and informal education across all ages: in schools, a museum, and bookstores.

About the lesson

The first thing I do is get to know them a little bit, see what their personality is like. Then we figure out what they're struggling with and dive in. I always like to have the kids do most of the talking, more guiding them to the answers than just saying words at them and hoping they stick.

I've worked with everyone from toddlers to eighth-graders. I've had kids who were raring to go and kids who wanted to be anywhere but there, but we always ended up having a good time and getting a good chunk of work done without too much pain and suffering!
