The most critical aspect of helping someone with math is twofold. First you need to determine where they are currently at. This is not where they are in a book or along a curriculum, but on a personal level. Math is a journey and we each move at our own pace. You also need to determine which method someone most resonates with. Some people find lecturing and example problems enough, but others need more guidance. A good tutor can find this out and model their behavior after what helps the student most.
