I establish a mode of learning that works for them ie. visual vs verbal and then create a work plan for the student and I to complete together.
I've worked with visual learners, verbal learners, and a combination of visual and verbal in a student.
Make sure they are able to teach a student of your abilities and that it's fair pricing for the help you need.
One of my more recent students was struggling with proofs and I managed to explain them in a clear, concise, and fun way so she remembered them.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
"How close am I to solving this problem on my own?" so the student can evaluate if they truly need help or want someone to do it for them.
