About Colleen

I am a young special education teacher with a certification to teach ages 3 through 21. I also have an endorsement in English as a Second Language. I currently work with high school students with intellectual disabilities, however I have experience working with all ages both in the general education setting and self-contained settings.

I am open to working with students of any age. I am comfortable with all subjects up to 8th grade. I am also comfortable with many high school subjects but would need more information on the specific course/goals prior to committing.

I am passionate about teaching, especially to those who struggle and need additional help. I am patient and understanding and use research-based practices to help students understand topics.

I am currently in graduate school through the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign working towards my Masters in Special Education. I am committed to learning and expanding my knowledge and I hope to share that knowledge with many more students along the way.

I have wanted to be a teacher since I was young. I have years of volunteer experience in the classroom, along with babysitting, camp counselor jobs, and more. All of these part-time jobs led me to my current full-time job as a teacher!

I am a high school special education teacher but I am certified to teach ages 3-21. This means I am familiar with all ages and most subjects.

About the lesson

During the first session, I like to get to know the student and their own personal life. This allows me to build a relationship with the student and learn about their interests so I can later incorporate them into the lessons. I also like to work closely with parents/guardians to listen to their concerns and any ideas or tips they may have for working with their child.

I am open to teaching many different subjects at many different levels, therefore I also like to take the first session to learn more about the specific topic and the specific goals for the student. This allows me to become familiar with the subject/topic they are requesting and allows me to individualize the process for them.

I have worked with students as young as infants up to adults with disabilities. I am certified to teach ages 3-21 and have experience with students with severe disabilities as well as with students with no disabilities.
