About Sean
I love teaching Math. I work hard every day to allow my students to share in this love. I have taught for over 15 years in public and private schools in Philadelphia and the suburbs. I hold Level 2 - PA state Music, Special Education, and Mathmatics certifications. In the School District of Philadelphia, I currently teach 7th and 8th grade Mathematics. I have also taught Math, English, and Science as a special education teacher to children with special needs as a self-contained classroom teacher and also as an inclusion teacher (team teaching). I tutor students weekly (outside of school hours), to help them with Algebra and Geometry.
Nothing is more enjoyable and meaningful to me than when a student shows progress and experiences success. Seeing the "lightbulb come on" gives me such joy.
I began teaching as a Music Teacher in a residential environment, teaching to children with severe disabilities. I held that position for 2 years, and enjoyed working with this population so much, that I decided to further my career by getting a masters degree and certification in special education. I began working in the School District of Philadelphia (as they allowed me to teach and gain experience while working toward my degree and certification).
I received my Masters of Education degree in Special Education from Holy Family Universtiy, and my Bachelor of Arts degree in Music Education from Temple University. I hold PA state certification in Music, Special Education, and Middle Years Mathematics.
I have over 15 years experience teaching Music, Special Education and Math in Special Education and Regular Education Environments. I am currently teaching 7th and 8th grade Math in the School District of Philadelphia. I also tutor students outside of school in math.

The typical process I use when working with a new student: I work on developing a positive and caring relationship. I focus on introducing myself, my vocational and educational backgrounds, and discuss instructional goals - This is done to develop a plan in how to successfully reach those goals. Often, I collaborate with a student's school teacher(s) to discuss this plan and provide continuity when outside the classroom.
I have worked with many different populations from: Students with Special Needs (Intellectual Disability, Learning Disability and Autism). I continue to teach in the district as a Middle Years math teacher in both, regular and special education classrooms.
Everyone is capable of learning and if you are persistent and tenacious, you will experience success. As a teacher, I am responsible for instructing subject matter and presenting it in a way that is most helpful and useful for the student(s)
One recent event I am fond of was when a of student of mine (with autism), decided while I was showing how to solve a problem, remarked: "Let me answer", which was a great moment of inspriration. This student was very eager to learn, but had difficulty with focus and at times worked without listening for instructions first. The student had been working toward more independence (gradual release from teacher), and when he said "Let me do it", I said okay, but remember what you learned. He listened first before working which helped him experience more success. I was elated.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Questions to consider would be:
What do I need to know by the end of the lesson?
Do I understand the Lesson Objectives?
What concept or proecess is giving me the most trouble and preventing me from understanding?
