About Elisabeth

Hello!

Not only do I teach math, but also I do my best to inspire confidence and excitement about it! I love teaching in creative, out of the box ways, that are particularly suited to my student(s). My goal is to create a positive learning environment in which YOU learn best.

I have experience working with ESL and EFL students and have been teaching math for 5 years to 6th-9th grades. I have taught everything from 6th grade math to Algebra 2, but can also tutor pre-calculus and calculus. I can also help you learn how to use your calculator or online websites to help you!

Qualifications

BA in Mathematics , BA in Math Education, TEFL certification

I love helping students who struggle with math make connections and realize that they ARE CAPABLE!

When I was in highschool, a friend needed help teaching their son math and I started working with him- writing tests and designing lessons for him. I LOVED it and realized that I was both capable of and interested in teaching math. I decided to pursue teaching math and I have not regretted it for one minute.

I have a BA in math and math education and a TEFL certification. I have been teaching for 5 years, and have tutored many students. I know a little bit of Chinese and ASL as well.

First, I will try to figure out what they need and what they know. It is helpful to have a couple of problems that they do know and then a few that they don't. Then, I will have them talk through their thought process and tell me what they know. Once I have a good idea of what they need, I will try a couple different methods to see what helps the student the best. I like to intersperse questions about the person so I can use things that interest them.

I have worked with students aging from 6 year olds to college students. I have helped people prepare for standardized tests, helped them with homework, and helped them improve math skills in general. I have worked with special ed students who have trouble with calculations. I have worked with many ESL students and have even used some Chinese to help me teach. I often work with students whose convidence in math is extremely low, and who are afraid of it.

Look for a teacher who knows the material and is willing to figure out how you work and what you, individually, need. Also look for someone who is going to encourage you and help you build confidence as well as skills.

I had been working with a student for over two years, and I asked her a question, and she thought about it, thought through the different tools she could use, and then applied the correct one! I was so excited to see how much she had grown over that period and what she was capable of doing.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What do I need help with? (homework, test prep, specific examples from class)
What questions do I have? (think through notes and homework)
What have I already tried?
What types of problems are challenging?
What types of problems do I understand/find to be easy? What helps me learn? (think movement, pictures, notes, etc.)
