About Sam

I remember what it was like to learn all different kinds of math for the first time, I remember how frustrating it was at times, and I remember how poorly some of my teachers presented material.

A lot of teachers believe that they should spend more time on theory and explaining how certain concepts came to be. The history of math is great however when it comes time to actually solve problems the theory and history is not going to get you very far.

This is why I believe that creating procedures and doing practice problems is the best way to quickly learn how to solve various math problems. When you have a series of steps to help you break down a problem, organize the information, and work towards a solution, the math becomes a lot less scary. Math is like baking a cake, if you follow the steps you get the result you are looking for but if you don’t you just make a mess.

I help my students make the procedures they need to confidently and efficiently solve their homework and exam problems while also understanding the methods they are applying.

I have a major in mechanical engineering and a double minor in computer and electrical engineering from Purdue University so I have seen my fair share of math. If you choose to work with me your math IQ, test scores, and overall confidence will skyrocket in a short period of time like magic!

There are countless examples of great students that aren’t performing well do to poor teaching and I enjoy being able to fix that. I love being able to help students obtain a better understanding of course material, increase their confidence, and improve their test scores.

Many of my students started working with me with the “I hate math” attitude and with only a handful of sessions I am able to completely turn this around to the “I love math” attitude. This is because I use tips and tricks to teach my students how to do their problems the easy way. By building procedures and check lists my students are able to tackle any problem they see on a test.

I started teaching when I realized that I was much better at explaining material than most school teachers and when I learned techniques that made problem solving much easier than what was being shown in class

Additionally I have tutored math throughout high school, college, and post-graduation.

About the lesson

When I start working with a new student I will typically begin by working through their homework problems with them. I will observe what techniques they are applying and I will ask them about what methods they are learning in school. From there I will see where they are struggling and begin helping them by either adjusting their problem solving approach or by supplying additional tools and strategies for them to use.

I have worked with boys and girls ranging from elementary school age up to college age.
