About Jonathan

In high school, I tutored several students in elementary, high school and even one student taking pre-cal in college.

Education: I have just received a master's degree from UAB with a focus in mathematics.

Training: Since my freshman year at UAB, I tutored students in college, high school, and elementary in many different subjects of mathematics.

About the lesson

First, I like to get to know them somewhat. Ask questions about where they are and where they have come from. I see this as a way of connecting and building trust in order that the students and myself can be more transparent with questions and problems regarding the subject at hand.

Then, I try to get an idea of their level of understanding. Typically, they come in with questions in a certain area of their math curriculum; however, ususally, I find that the conceptual understanding is lacking in areas that stretch back further than where they are at now. What I usually do is, once they give me their questions and where they are at in their study, I flip a few pages back and ask questions regarding their previous work. This allows me to diagnose more accurately where the conceptual understanding is lacking and engage the root issuse with much more clarity.

Recently, I had tutored a young girl in elementary school who put up a wall to learning when her parents tried to help her understand her work. After the school year, her dad texted me and said thanks because she had passed her class and did really well.
