About Gemma

With over 6 years of mixed experience, I've worked as a tutor in an English and math learning center, helping kids age 4-16 achieve (and exceed) academically. I've worked as a Teaching Assistant in an elementary school classroom, and I've also tutored privately; in other words, I've done it all! So I'm really equipped to prepare students and tutor them effectively.

I'm currently studying toward my Elementary Education and Special Education degree. I recently relocated to America from Britain, but I've quickly become involved in activities--I'm an assistant Cubmaster for a local Cub Scout Pack, and I coached fifth-grade students for an upcoming Science Olympiad. I love science and math, and I'm deeply passionate about sharing my love of these subjects with students so that I can help them become confident in their own abilities. That said, I am also happy to work with children studying English, reading, social studies, and any other areas of interest!

I really love working with kids. I enjoy sharing my knowledge and understanding and any tips and tricks that might help kids get that "ah!" moment.

I especially love helping children who might lack confidence or experience significant barriers to progressing. It's very rewarding to see these children come on in leaps and bounds and makes the extra grit completely worth it!

During my time at school, I had the opportunity to work with my form tutor and help in her math class. Here I got to teach my own lessons and work with kids who needed extra support or wanted pushing further. From there, I knew I was great at helping kids learn and I carried on pursuing this route as a tutor and then a teaching assistant.

I've been working in education for the past 6 years as a tutor and a teaching assistant. I've had a lot of experience working with a diverse range of children from the ages of 4-16. I'm also studying towards a degree in elementary and special education with dual licensure.

Most importantly, I want to build a relationship with the student, so learning about them and their interests is key - that way I can try and mix in elements into their learning. I also want to get a baseline of where the student is at and how they learn. If they're a younger student, I like to initially have a chat with their parents and find out how they're doing and what it is they're struggling with or what they want pushing in.

If there are no assessments for me to look at, I like to conduct my own assessment, and then from there, I will know where the child is at. I'll do a learning style assessment with all students to adapt my teaching style to their needs.

Once I have all this info, I can start exploring different teaching methods and finding what works best.

I've worked with a diverse range of student. The age range is from 4-16. But beyond that, I've worked with children who have English as a second language, I've worked with gifted students who want to go even further, I've worked with students who can't be in school, and I've also worked with students with special educational needs.

I recently had an initial chat with an incoming student and it was really great to get to know this student. They were very capable and confident and had lots to share with me. It was great to have a student be so comfortable and willing to open up in the first session! I'm really excited for our future sessions.
