About Richard

After more than 33 years of operating a commercial karate dojo, Chief Instructor Mr. Ray has retired from full time teaching. He now only teaches select private students, and prefers to teach those who are focused and dedicated to the study of martial arts. Short term self defense/ defensive tactics courses may be available.

I began martial arts training as a freshman in college. By time I was awarded my first belt, I knew that I would be a teacher. Five years later I was hired for my first full time teaching job, and two years after that I opened my first karate school :)

The chief instructor, Mr. Richard Ray, is a former police officer, a licensed bodyguard, and a licensed bodyguard instructor, and a senior Firearms instructor. He has 37 years of training and teaching martial arts, an 8th degree black belt in karate, a 6th degree black belt in Kenpo and a 3rd degree black belt in Taekwondo.

About the lesson

The first step in becoming a student of Mr. Ray is to fill out a New Member application. If Mr. Ray selects your application for initial membership, he will contact you for a face to face interview. Those who pass the the interview will be offered a Trial Membership. After the Trial Membership, if compatible you may be offered a full membership.

We have worked with all types of students, male and female, from ages 5 to 60s.

An ideal martial arts instructor would likely be a cross between a bank president, and a drill instructor. He is patient and understands the students needs, but he also enforces discipline and regulations. He should have extensive knowledge in his art, but he is experienced enough to teach complex principles in simple terms.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Potential students should understand that there are no shortcuts in martial arts training. While students can learn effective self-defense in a short time, it takes consistent and dedicated training to perfect the moves. Any school or organization that claims differently is not being honest.

Private lessons are $160.00 per hour (minimum of 2 people, maximum of 4) Private classes can range from $195.00 per month to about $135.00 per month per person, depending on your level of commitment. Discounts are offered for family members enrolled together.
