About Sophia

Sophia is an international development professional, founder of Papilia, and culture etiquette/wellness expert. She began her professional career in 2003, motivated by what she witnessed at the age of 10 in Sri Lanka. Her desire for creating global impact has taken her to over 30 countries, working with international and local clients on contracts upwards of $500 million.

In 2014, she left her full-time job to pursue her dreams of starting a business. One month after departing, she was faced with an event that almost took her life. She was in a car accident, hit by three cars and an 18-wheeler head-on. At that moment she realized the fragility of life, and decided to live life full of purpose and intention.

In 2015, she started a new chapter full of experiences and enlightenment. She sold her house and all her belongings, ready for a fresh start. It was around this time where the idea for Papilia emerged. The concept was born out of a passion for travel and curiosity to experience culture in a mindful and responsible way. As an avid traveler, she spent hours researching cultural nuances and etiquette to ensure she would feel confident and comfortable in any business or leisure setting. Shortly thereafter, she found a client base who identified with the same issues she experienced.

In 2016, her mother passed away unexpectedly. The value of life, loss, and human interaction was personified once again. She sought to balance her business and personal life while managing a tremendous amount of grief. Through this difficult experience, she found solace in practicing a lot of yoga, and was inspired to take yoga teacher training. Sophia is now a RYT 200 yoga instructor, Level 1 Reiki Practitioner, and is obtaining her certification as a Yoga Life Coach.

Sophia's ultimate goal is to motivate people to thrive through mindful intention and awareness.

She has combined her personal and professional experiences to develop customized mindful leadership and cross cultural communication trainings for clientele who want to lead a purposeful and well balanced life, build confidence, influence their audience, and set themselves apart from their competition.

She has been featured in Forbes Magazine and The Huffington Post, and has spoken in numerous universities, and conferences. She received her BA from the University of Virginia and Masters in International Development Policy from Duke University.

I started teaching out of a passion to connect with people on a personal level around the world when I used to work in the international development industry full time.

I have continued to work with people on various levels (life coaching, yoga, etc) because I love seeing people feel confident in their own skin, and that is what motivates me to do what I do.

About the lesson

I ask all my clients to take an intial needs survey in order to obtain a clearer understanding of their expectations. After they fill out this survey, I contact them to schedule an intial 30 minute call to talk through their expectations.

I offer leadership development training specific to a certain skill set (understanding culture, diversity, communication, project managment) and I also offer coaching services that more closely relates to mindful leadership and work/life balance.

I have worked with students from around the world, ranging in age, interests, experiences... you name it, I have worked with them.

Do you homework about the person and ask questions that are relevant to what you want to learn or practice. Most importantly, make sure you feel comfortable working with the person, and that you trust the relationship.
