About Rebecca

Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) is a hugely important aspect of a child’s development. With these lessons, I will work one-on-one with your child to help develop these skills.

As a teacher, I have experienced first-hand how difficult it is to manage SEL teaching in a busy classroom environment. Teachers must meet the emotional needs of a child as they constantly scan the playground to ensure everyone’s physical safety, act as umpire in organized games, and supervise clean-up. An elementary school classroom is a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment, making it impossible for teachers and students to really slow down and take the time to discuss social emotional issues that may arise.

Scheduled SEL time is not always effective either. While many schools implement an SEL program to be used in classrooms, this can also come with a host of difficulties. Children who are reluctant to speak up in class may not want to share during SEL lessons either, even if they have a lot on their mind, and children who are being bullied may not want to share their vulnerabilities while their tormentor is sitting next to them. With a one-on-one model, children can share their experiences and their vulnerabilities in a judgment-free zone.

I have a BA in Psychology, six years of classroom experience, and a certification in the SEL-based Open Circle curriculum. I have worked in classrooms with children from preschool to second grade.

Lessons will be 15 minutes each, and will include a one-on-one conversation as well as an activity for your child. Parents can choose between five or two lessons a week for a 36 week period.

As a psychology major in college, I thought it would be beneficial to intern at the preschool on campus. I immediately fell in love with teaching and got my elementary school teaching license. The more I worked in classrooms, the more I saw the need for a focus on social emotional learning.

I have a certification in Open Circle, a social-emotional learning program based in Boston, Mass. While that particular program no longer exists, the foundations of social-emotional learning are universal. I also have six years of classroom experience and a BA in Psychology, where I focused primarily on child psychology.

About the lesson

Before working with children, I find it helpful to talk with parents first, to get a sense of the types of social-emotional challenges their child is facing. Once I have that information, I’ll know what to look out for and which areas to focus on.

Details

Lessons will be priced at $6 per 15-minute session. Parents have options of whether they want the full program (5 lessons a week for 36 weeks) or a modified version (2 or 3 times a week).
