About Elizabeth
In addition to our school partnerships, we have worked with NPO’s and NGO’S abroad. We do staff and teacher training and work with private clients one on one to develop the skills necessary to make their vision a reality.
Elizabeth has been teaching students of all ages for over ten years. Before becoming a teacher she held a leadership position in a number of different industries and found that her passion lay in the motivation and empowerment of individuals and groups. Dedimus Potestatem currently works with NGO's, NPO's and grassroots organizations in addition to school partnerships in New York and New Jersey.
Elizabeth has taught at Hackley Preparatory, the United Nations International School, the Packer Collegiate School, the Resurrection Episcopal Day School, The Hewitt School, The Hudson School and more. Elizabeth also teaches private in home classes for students from Dalton, Hunter, St. Bernard's, Horace Mann, The Riverdale Country School and Chapin.
While attending college Elizabeth took particular interest in Psychology, Philosophy and Sociology. These subjects instilled in her the importance of cultural differences, communication, negotiation and interpersonal skills which have been invaluable to her in her years of networking and leadership. Elizabeth taught a variety of subjects while in school and fell in love with the rewards that came with being an educator. She continued to teach after graduating and has worked for various companies, charities, Presidential and Congressional campaigns.
Elizabeth studied International Politics at Oxford University. Elizabeth has also trained under Dr. Daniel Shapiro (Founder of the Harvard International Program on Negotiation) at the Harvard Program on Negotiation at Harvard Law School and at the Institute for Personal Leadership at Columbia Business School. Her aim in founding Dedimus Potestatem is to help people discover the joy and freedom that comes with the empowerment of the self and, consequently, the empowerment of others.

Debate with Ms. Chen is a free and open place where I get to express myself. It has made me more confident in my opinions and has taught me the skills I need to convince others using arguments backed-up by strong evidence.
“
“My daughter (12) and son (15) have been in Competitive Debate for two years now, and they really enjoy the program. The experience of participating in middle school and high school debate competitions has been valuable and they have sharpened their research and argumentation skills significantly. Most important, however, has been the growing confidence, positive attitude toward learning and growing, and working in teams toward collective goals.”
— Sherine Jayawickrama, parentAs mother to a tween who first met Mrs. Chen at age 8 and grew up in her leadership, mock trial & debate classes, I’ve simply astounded by her at 3 levels. First is her ability to connect with children. My son simply adores her. So does my 6 year old daughter and all of her other students, to the extent that the parents are fighting to have her teach their children’s classes! Second is the passion she has for her mission: to create a young generation of intellectuals with morals, righteousness and critically appraises what they are presented with. When faced with an unfounded accusation of academic misconduct, instead of fear or defence, my son cautioned me against use of ad hominum in my email response to the teacher. I was simply dumbstruck. And humbled. No price for guessing whom he’s learned that from! Last but not least, is Mrs. Chen’s ability to connect with parents. She simply brightens up the lobby whenever I run into her at school. Her smile, her enthusiasm, and the intellectually stimulating conversations are simply the best!
— Vicki Tse, parentOne of the best things to happen to my son, Sasha, was starting after school debate and court trial classes with Dedimus Potestatem. At that time he was a 9-year old 5th grade student. Fast forward almost four years and he is a confident 8th grader, ready to argue what he believes in and open enough to engage adults and kids alike. Working with Dedimus Potestatem and participating in these classes has taught him teamwork, public speaking and the importance of fact checking. Mrs. Chen knows how to work with kids, how to motivate them and always encourages them to do their best. She’s fun, warm and always there for them - we’re truly fortunate to have her be an influence in Sasha’s life.
— Ivana Kirzanic, parent“
“Having a debate team at our school has boosted the confidence and curiosity of our participating middle-schoolers. I’ve seen huge growth in critical thinking skills and a more polished approach to expressing thoughtful opinions,”
— Monica Masterson, Director of auxiliary programs, BASIS Independent Manhattan“
“The benefit of Dedimus Potestatem’s enrichment programs for the students went beyond raising one’s self-confidence and debate skills. The programs teach leadership and critical thinking, empowering students to stand up for what is right, fight for the truth, learn to value teamwork, develop goals, become engaged in civic discourse, and feel empowered to become beacons of peace for a better world. Just a fantastic leadership organization!”
