About Gabriel

Salve! Mihi nomen est Gabriel! I graduated Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude with a B.A in classics from Randolph College and have studied Latin and Greek all over the world, from the foot of the Acropolis in Athens and beneath the gothic spires of Paris to the eternal city of Rome herself, where I also had the privilege of working as a high school Latin instructor and tour guide. A passion for teaching and learning languages later took me to North Macedonia as an English teacher with the Peace Corps. There I worked with seemingly everybody, from elementary and middle school students to adults, and sometimes speaking Macedonian the whole way!

My goals as a classics teacher are twofold. First, I want students to see and appreciate the classical languages as, well, languages (!) rather than a daunting (and boring!) puzzle. Second, and this is perhaps most important, the classics and all the pleasure and fun it gives belongs to everyone.

Learning a foreign language is like a key that unlocks an entire world. The classical languages are especially generous in that the worlds they offer transcend thousands of years.

My favorite thing about teaching Latin/Greek is having the privilege of giving those worlds (and all the stories they have to tell) to students.

I took up my first teaching jobs during college; I gave weekly Latin lessons to 4th-grade honors students, tutored Latin/Greek, and taught a few introductory Greek courses.

My first post-graduate teaching job was my work as a tour guide and instructor in Rome with the Paideia Institute.

I graduated with highest honors with a BA in classics from Randolph College.

I've completed the Peace Corps' three months of intensive Pre-Service Training (PST) for TEFL teachers.

I've studied spoken Latin/Greek and comprehensible input (CI) pedagogy with the Paideia Institute.

About the lesson

I like to learn more about my students (e.g. where they are and where they would like to be with their studies, their interests, etc.) through informal conversation.

My students have ranged all throughout elementary and middle school (grades 1, 3-8) to adults, including not only Americans but foreign nationals who spoke English as a second language.

Completing my volunteer service with the Peace Corps.
