About Matthew
I think history, civics and the social sciences in general are crucial for students to be introduced to. I also beleive that these topics should never be boring to the student, as the content is anything but. I make sure my students are engrossed in the material and realize our world today exists because of these many interesting events of the past. I have found this approach helps them not only grasp the material, but also helps them memorize the mundane answers that may be required to pass the tests.
I have a BA in Political Science/History and a Professional M.S. in Global and National Security, both from the University of New Mexico. I have lived in Moscow, Istanbul, Medellin and the US Pacific Northwest, US Southwest and traveled to various other places. I believe these experiences have enhanced my historical knowlege which allows me to convey that material better to the student.
Before finishing graduate school, I was an English as a Second Language Teacher in various continents. I have years of experience working with classrooms and individual students. In addition, I think its a plus that as a teenager, I absolutely hated school. I struggled, was always in trouble and found the process tedious. I dropped out in the 11th grade, before eventually going to community college, travelling all over the country and world, then returning to university and graudate school. I understand the struggling student because I once was one and I made it to the other side. Let me help your student get a better trajectory.
(concealed information)
I love the learning process, including learning alongside the students. I believe knowledge and academic tools exist to make the student think more fully for themselves so that they may make the wisest decisions in their work and social lives.
I left university and wanted to see the world. After getting my English teaching certificate in Sofia, Bulgaria, I found a job teaching English in a small town on the Black Sea in Turkey and immediately connected to the educational process.
My Bachelor of Arts was a major in Political Science with a minor in History. Truth be told, I took a B.A. in Poly-Sci because I wanted to challenged myself with civics/government instead of going to my most natural subject, which is history. My Master of Science in Global and National Security still connects greatly with any high school or undergraduate social science and technology courses. In graduate school, I took courses in cybersecurity, information technology, directed-energy, nuclear security, as well as international relations and economics courses. I graduated with a 4.16 GPA.
Before attending graduate school, I worked as an ESL teacher in Bulgaria, Turkey and Colombia and was an undergraduate student at Lomonosov-Moscow State University in Russia. Although ESL is a different subject, the classroom and tutoring experience was very beneficial to hone my skills.

I first assess where the student is at- academically and socially. I ask as many questions as possible with the student so they can voice to me their geniune hopes or frustrations about their current situation. I work with the student to agree on solutions and set measurable goals to a path of victory.
The student must see the value in our work together, and I make sure to keep them as co-pilot of our project, while simultaneously challenging them and keeping them on track.
Every kind. I have worked with the children of diplomats, financial executives and oil magnates as well as working with refugee students to students in the Albuquerque Public School system. I have worked with all sorts of learners and I am sensitive to the individual needs of some students- as I was one of those myself.
Find someone who both loves and knows what they're talking about, with a bonus of first-hand knowledge or experience of places or events.
