My approach is largely goal-oriented. I want to know first and foremost what you intend to get out of lessons, what your expectations are, the type of playing you want to learn, what your short-term and long-term goals are, etc. I also try to tailor lessons around the student's musical interests (as much as possible), so I take notes of favorite artists, songs, etc.
I've worked with students of many ages; as young as 5 years old, as well as adults.
Make sure the teacher has the ability to cultivate your particular gifts. Everyone learns a bit differently. Whether you tend to learn better "by ear" or through reading sheet music, it's important that a teacher knows the right approach for you.
