Determine what their level of playing is. For most students I encourage them to learn the Major Scale and view it as Zero reference point. Then when you learn something you categorize by comparing it to Zero ie. "This is the same as a Major Scale, or this different than the Major Scale. Always try aplying technique, or theory to a musical example or song. Many years of printed lesson hard copy hand-outs available.
