About Tyson
I've been teaching multiple instruments for over 20 years. In 2002, I graduated from Whitman College with a BA in Independently Designed Major Fine Arts: Music Composition, Painting and Writing. For my senior thesis I composed and produced a full length symphony for 18 musicians, films of my paintings and multiple line spoken word. I additionally studied with multiple mentors in Jazz Guitar, Jazz Piano, Jazz Bass, Jazz Compositition and Arranging, Classical and 20th Century Music Composition and Theory, Just Intonation, Instrument Invention and many others. Since graduating, I've been living and working as a professional musician and artist receiving many grants, honors and awards with performances, commissions and teaching engagements at prestigious civic institutions, venues and musical festivals throughout the US and multiple continents. At the same time that I've cherished all the experiences and opportunities my career so far has created for me, I've also truly loved teaching and get deep satisfaction from helping others discover the joy of music and guiding people in the powerful pathway of cultivating their own musicality and artistry.
Profession Artist Bio:
tyson ayers is an Oakland, CA based musical instrument inventor, immersive theatre producer, and large scale installation artist. They are an experienced leader and project facilitator, as a project director/lead artist of the Shrine of Sympathetic Resonance, Sound Cave Project, Foundation for the Preservation of Fantastic Possibilities, Centennial Celebration of the Elationists, Star Star Roadhouse, Living Pulse Project; and has greatly supported the larger San Francisco Bay Area’s artist communities through serving as a core organizer of the MAPP: Missions Arts Performance Project and Program Director of Million Fishes Arts (Artist Residency Program and Multidisciplinary Venue). Their musical art installations have been featured at large scale music festivals including Burning Man, Lightning in a Bottle, Rainbow Serpent Festival (Australia), Symbiosis Gathering, What The Festival, Okeechobee Music Festival, Wanderlust Festival, Maker Faire, and many others. In the civic art world they have shown and/or performed at the DeYoung Museum, SomArts, MCCLA, and has received recognition with the Zellerbach Family Foundation Grant, the San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) Organizational Project Grant, the SFAC Individual Artist Commission, NPR Radio Affiliates; and commissioned for art installations as far away as Beirut, Lebanon to Melbourne, Australia and all over the US.

In my experience, personally customizing lessons to match each individual student's interests, goals and learning styles gets the best results by far. My first lesson with any new student starts by asking the right questions to really understand what will most help that student to thrive within our lessons. Then we begin by covering any quick to learn parts based on that student's level before building towards their goals in a step by step way focusing on what's going to be the most fun for them to play with throughout the week so they do it more often instead of pushing the common discipline based model that can quickly make playing music less fun and in the long run not as quick to learn.
Doing a quick phone consultation can be a great way to get a feel for how well any teacher's teaching style may match with your needs and interests. Once you've found someone you think might be a match, try out a first lesson with them to get a clearer picture of what working together may be like!

Details
All my students pay me between $60-100 per hour lesson on a sliding scale, with each student determining what rate is most appropriate for them. If needed, further discounted rates can be received through work/trade arrangements.
