About Lou
My teaching approach:
I bring a high level of enthusiasm, and expertise to my lesson studio. I treat each student as an individual, and I prepare individual lesson plans for students that are engaging, and focus on keeping them excited about playing guitar. While, I have my favorite texts, and songs. I don't have a regimented approach to my lessons, and except for the first few lessons, everyone's lessons are different. It's my goal to draw students in, and share my love of guitar. I want people to be excited about learning, and playing music. I have a Performance Degree in Classical Guitar. I have been teaching for 17 years. I have managed teaching programs, taught at Universities, worked as a clinician for major guitar manufactures, played in touring bands, worked in recording studios both as an Engineer and a Studio Musician. I have a great passion for playing, and teaching guitar, and I bring a high level of commitment and expertise to my teaching studio.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:
I ask students about experience playing other instruments. How long they ave played. I might ask a few questions about Musical Forms, Harmonic Rhythm, Scales, Triads to get a sense of their understanding of basic music theory. I will ask about blues improvisation, various methods of speed picking (Sweep, Economy, Alternate.) Classical/Fingerstyle players we talk about rest-stroke, free-stroke, etc.. Than we talk about left hand position, and examine independence, strength, and flexibility while playing something easy. Finally we wrap up with review Guitar Tab/music notation, Ear training.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
I like to start at the beginning, Helping students to understand the how to hold the instrument, and work on developing good left & right hand techniques. Many aspects of playing guitar successfully are "technique Driven," If a person doesn't understand what they are trying to accomplish with their technique, this can be elusive, and make playing difficult. I bring in lesson plans, but I encourage the student to ask questions, and help them solve problems that arise. Problems might be physical, or trying to figure out a song by ear. I use this to segue to music theory.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:
A person with a love of music who is motivated to learn guitar while having fun!
