About Evan

I grew up around music (my father plays guitar, fiddle, and accordion) and studied alto saxophone and piano in school. I played saxophone in the award-winning Amsterdam Marching Rams marching band all four years of high school, as well as the high school concert band

I started playing guitar when I was a junior in high school (more than 20 years ago now) and am largely self-taught; at the same time I was learning punk, heavy metal, 90’s alternative, and classic rock in high school garage bands, I picked up bluegrass, country, and Irish fiddle tunes playing with my dad at festivals and jams. I played guitar with the high school jazz band and began playing out with rock bands my senior year and I haven’t stopped since.

I studied studio recording in college and have played gigs all over the world, from street corners and neighborhood bars to festival stages. I have added some level of proficiency on a wide range of instruments and played a number of roles in a long list of ensembles over the years. Consequently I appreciate and understand a wide range of styles and instrumental approaches and can use my years of learning on the job to guide you on your musical journey, whatever your destination might be.

I love to play music and I love to learn new tricks and unlock new secrets. I take a special delight in guiding others to these moments of discovery in their own playing.

Formal lessons in saxophone (school band from 4th grade to 12th grade) and piano (private lessons from 6th grade to 9th grade). 20+ years of self-directed guitar studies and experience playing a range of instruments before the public. Bachelor of Science degree in Communication Studies (focused on studio recording).

About the lesson

I like to talk to a new student about what kind of music they are into and what their goals are before we ever tune up an instrument. When I have a good idea of what a student is hoping to achieve through lessons, we will play a few pieces, either traditional and well known selections or pieces the student chooses, so I can get an idea of where the student's skills are currently and how to proceed to reach their stated goals. I will tailor a lesson plan based on this initial lesson that is unique to the individual student and designed to reach their individual playing goals.
