Determine a baseline of their knowledge of music and the instrument. Then, as I mentioned in my introduction,
I would advise to find a teacher you are comfortable with, first. If you cannot connect that way, learning will be near impossible, in my opinion.
A teacher should be responsive to your needs, while also guiding you out of your comfort zone. Growth is only achieved when we are out of our comfort zone.
In the end, it is about having fun. If you aren't having fun, what's the point, right?
