About Ryc

I'm a longtime player with a real love for the music. Have been playing guitar (for 55 years!) and occasionally gave lessons to people that ask me. I enjoy encouraging and helping others. And my friends said: "You should do this more often!"

So when I saw this opportunity to teach, I said: "Yes! Now's the time!" Now I'm making myself available for students who are just getting started, or players that want to learn more styles of playing, and expand their repertoire of technique and musical ideas.

In the main claim to fame department, I made the top 32 out of 600 at the song contest in Kerrville Texas, and the top 40 out of 1200 at NewSong in West Virginia in 2004. I also played at the Florida Folk Festival in 2008, and will be playing the South Florida Folk Festival in February 2024. I also played a nursing homes for twenty five years. I've got a song for just about everybody, including your grandpa!

I play everything from country and blues and old time rock and roll, to the more traditional forms in Irish, and Bluegrass, and folk (including the new stuff) and old-timey music. As well as the tunes I grew up on James Taylor, Arlo Guthrie, all of that canon. I played 'em for so many years, I write in all these styles, too!

I would teach the same way I learned - I play everything I like, and so can you!

Over the years every now and then someone has asked me for a lesson, and I gave it to them.

I am not yet an experienced professional teacher (which is why I'm offering a reduced rate), but I have enthusiasm and ability, and a heart to help others bring music into the world. I have literally hundreds of songs I can draw from, to teach them. I'm a real player still learning how to be a teacher. Now I want to pay it forward and help others, as others have helped me.

I've been playing the guitar for 50 years, I'm an Award-winning songwriter and all around encourager.

About the lesson

I would teach the same way I was taught. We would start with a few songs the student likes and wants to learn, that are fairly easy. Just a few chords and strumming techniques, and practice singing and playing at the same time.

The focus would be the songs, and then the techniques required to play them. I would teach fingerpicking, and a few scales along with some basic music theory and chords on different parts of the neck.

We could go over some blues riffs and some rock an' roll. It depends on what the student wants to learn.

The two or three that I have taught were people who already knew how to play to some degree, and they were in their twenties or older.

Find one that you vibe well with, or that specializes in the music you like best.

I took one lesson from Rory Block, a living blues legend and a friend of mine, and from that I was able to write a good tune!
