About Barbara

I don't train singers to sound like me - or to sound like anyone else. Singers who study with me find their own particular healthy sound, and they can explore any genre of music they want once they have the proper training.

My career has included a wide variety of skills and talents that I deeply enjoy. Besides the music storytelling, and one on one teaching - there is an element of science (neurology, psychology, biology) and spirituality that enhances my work. And I was able to become a published author as well, tying in all the other aspects of teaching singing.

In the past 20 years, I have continued to study singing with the best teachers I can find. Not only do I work on my own voice with them, but I apprentice to them by bringing in recordings of my students and asking them about the next level I should work on. The most recent voice teacher I have studied / apprenticed to is Debra Byrd - who was the head voice coach on American Idol for ten years.

About the lesson

Working to build and strengthen their voices. Introducing them to songs that are right for them. Helping them bring their own personal life stories into their singing performances. Working with them on audition songs for shows and college admissions. Teaching them how to take care of their voice when they are sick or hoarse.

My students range from 11 years old (when their voices start to change) through adult (oldest performing singer is 70 years old). Students take lessons for many reasons – train their voice, learn to perform new songs, learn to express themselves, prepare for auditions, or performances, or recording studio sessions. All are welcome – you don’t have to sing in front of an audience to study singing.

Make sure you are comfortable with your singing teacher. The best kind of singing involves revealing your emotions and personal stories. So you need a teacher who is kind, sensitive, and cares about you as a person.

A recent student was accepted into an annual singing elimination contest in NYC, with performances every week for 3 months. We prepared 1 new song a week for 10 weeks, and after she was voted off, she was still invited back to sing an encore at the Finale. Three of the guest judges were Broadway singers. It was a challenging schedule, but a positive and satisfying experience for both of us.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Some people think that if they work up to singing one song, in one performance - and it goes really well, then they know all they need to know about singing, and they stop the lessons. But being a singer means being able to handle a wide variety of songs and genres, in many different performing situations. One good standing ovation doesn't mean you should stop studying.
