About Rachel
I teach exclusive yet down to earth, lively, and fun early educational music lessons tailored to your individual child covering percussion, ear/note melodic training, movement, elemenary voice and even guitar. I incorporate clapping, dancing, and instrumental props. (And whatever stuffed animal might be laying around.)
I have been trained by Music For Minors, an organization founded and based in Los Altos, California, volunteered as a music teacher, and organized the recitals for 2nd graders at Fox Elementary in Belmont, California for two years.
I have also facilitated children’s church performances incorporating ASL at Sunnyvale International Church in Sunnyvale, California.
I then sought training to become a licensed director and teacher of Music Together and ran my small company for a year before deciding I wanted something more tailored and focused on the individual child versus a group class. I enjoy the brightness of children and helping them learn.
I play the acoustic guitar, basic classical piano, and sing. I have written songs and performed them. I have led mid-week worship (vocals and guitar) at church, soloed youth worship, and currently sing backup and solo monthly at my church.
I love bringing a fun and sometimes goofy aspect to learning and sharing what I know with littles to keep them engaged.
I love working with children, I love music, I love performing. While I was working as a professional hairdresser, I wanted to find volunteer work. That is when I joined Music for Minors.
After having my son, I wanted him to learn the basics so he would be prepared to learn an instrument when he chose to. I enrolled him in Music Together. I enjoyed it very much and decided to become a Music Together teacher. Unfortunately, teachers mustn’t have their own children there (wildness becomes a problem quickly) so I continued teaching my son at home with my own developed skills and curriculum.
He is now 6, and very musical, making up his own songs in the correct melodic groupings, can keep steady beats and makes up rhythms, and can dance to the beat of songs. I am often given the impromptu treat of a dance show or silly Elmo song.

About the lesson

I assess the individual children’s musical ability/knowledge/natural inclination the first visit. I incorporate percussion, movement, and melody/voice together in one lesson. If there is a desire to learn guitar, I will begin with the basics and move on at the student’s pace. It is a simple and quick assessment. The child has either learned or not yet learned how to keep a beat, sing on key, etc. There are people who have a natural ability, however, music even in its simplest form still must be learned somehow.
I’ve worked with children from infants up to eight year olds. From an individual child to a group of 20+.
If I were a parent looking for a music teacher for my child, I would consider personality as well as their gifting and expertise. Look for someone who has a passion for their job.
I love encouraging children. I love seeing their sweet faces light up when they understand something. My desire is to provide a loving environment for them to learn, try, make mistakes, and grow.

Details
I offer personalized private lessons tailored to families who wish to have their children’s teacher come to them. I charge $55 for a 1 hour lesson. (If farther than 5 miles, $60.) I will teach private lessons to your children- you may or may not choose to share being a student in the lesson-it is not necessary, but might be fun!
My method in bringing private lessons to your home is so you don't have to travel, and the child has a focused teacher helping then develop the elements and components essential to musicality (pre-instrument) while having fun. It makes learning almost invisible to them and they stay engaged and enjoy themselves.
