About Kevin

I offer customized lessons for personal learning, college preparation, technical development. This is done with a focus on technique building, music theory, correct posture, and form, and most of all having fun.

With my lessons, you will learn to read notes, TABs, and chords, and apply them to learn songs. All the while choosing the best hand position, finger use, and right-hand technique. Though this can sound intimidating, I make sure we take small steps to achieve your musical goals.

Once this is mastered we move into the musicality aspect. Making songs go from playing for your friend in your garage to learning and playing new songs at a truly amazing level.

I love working with my students. Watching them grow musically, and seeing how music makes their lives better. I enjoy seeing a student beam with joy when their hard work pays off and they can play a song at any level. It is my goal to make independent musicians, who are enriched, encouraged, and emboldened by the skills they have learned.

I started teaching when I began my college education in 2008. I loved music, I loved playing music, and I wanted to share my abilities with others to help them grow to love to play music too.

I have a bachelor's degree in classical guitar performance, which includes a background in piano performance and music theory. I have performed on stages around the United States, and have taught music for over a decade to hundreds of students.

About the lesson

First I ask the student about their goals. Next, I have them explain some music they've played, and have them play it to evaluate. A total beginner can often times skip that step (though I do love a good performance of chopsticks). With an idea of their skillset and goals (or lack thereof), I begin working through a customized, but still guided standard methodology to help them grow musically.

I have worked with almost all ages. Within that, I most frequently work with elementary through high school-aged students.
During that time some of my students have been born uniquely. Some of my students have had autism, ADHD, and cerebral palsy. Each has posed some challenges, but I always make the effort to learn how they learn, so I can adapt to the student. This has given them each a positive experience, and I hold their thank you gifts in special fondness. I have not had to pass a student along to date.

Check the cost of the teacher. Music education is not like bargain shopping, and I have found the cheaper the teacher, the cheaper quality of the experience. A good quality teacher who has the experience, the resume, and charges right will offer you a truly good experience. They will take the care and attention to ensure growth and enjoyment in music. Musical instruments are a great thing to bargain shop on, a music teacher is not.

A student came to me in a lesson and said "Mr. Kevin, I have had a really bad day today, but I was looking forward to this lesson all day because you always make me laugh and really enjoy the guitar."

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Ask what the teacher offers aside from lessons. If they don't mention something that you are looking for, then ask if they do. Odds are that they are more than happy to accommodate, if they are not, find a different teacher. A good teacher will have a studio with different needs from student to student. When this happens they are likely to adapt. If they are unwilling then it will be a bad fit and you should look for a different one.

The pricing currently offered is:

$30 for 30 minutes
$45 for 45 minutes
$60 for 60 minutes

This allows for makeups that are offered for any lessons that give notice 24 hours prior to the lesson time. Any lessons missed without notice are considered no shows and are still charged.
