About Darrell
I teach the basics of music theory alongside guitar technique. Understanding music theory will allow students to learn to play other instruments more easily, from piano to glockenspiel and anything else that makes noise, even drums!
My favorite part of teaching guitar and theory is that point in which the student has their "lightbulb" moment(which happens a lot). Seeing the excitement on the face of a student who just learned something new is the best kind of joy.
When Covid-19 quarantine began, I tried my hand at teaching my brother and neighbor how to play, with moderate success.
Self-taught guitar player. I learned from YouTube mostly, and I will stand by it as an excellent platform for learning guitar. The thing about learning music is that it never actually stops. You just get better, then your goals get higher.

The only real students that have had so far are my brother and a neighbor of ours, who were both taught for free(out of boredom and to see if I could). The neighbor had a moderate amount of guitar understanding and no theory understanding. My brother had neither. When Covid-19 hit and quarantine began, the three of us met up to play and practice guitar, pretty much all day every day of the shutdown. During this time(3ish months), my neighbor improved his theory knowledge significantly and applied it easily to what he already knew. My brother(and roomate) on the other hand, got longer and more in depth lessons, resulting is his own understanding of music theory and guitar technique to soon rival my own, from no experience at all to start.
Not all self taught teachers are built equally. Guitars are designed in such a way that in depth understanding of musical theory is not necessarily required to be able to carry a tune. That's not to say that those lacking theory knowledge are bad teachers or players, rather that their area of expertise is limited to their understanding of a single instrument instead of the theory that applies to all instruments.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Well the big question is what do you want to play? Do you have a particular genre in mind? Would you prefer to play rhythm or lead? Flatpick, fingerstyle, or strumming? Do you want eventually learn to play multiple instruments?
