About Edward
I have been teaching guitar since 2009, and have taught students from all age ranges and in various types of institutions, from children taking their first ever private lessons at their homes, all the way to adults at the college level. I specialize in jazz but have performed and worked in pop, classical, rock, and even metal genres.
I hold a BFA Jazz Performance degree from CUNY City College of New York, and an MA Music degree from City College of New York where I jointly worked on degree credits at the acclaimed CUNY Graduate Center department of music theory.
My private studies include world class musicians including Miles Okazaki, Dan Tepfer, Jacob Sacks, Jason Rigby, and many more. I regularly perform in various groups around New York, most notably in the jazz fusion/electronic group Secret Mall.
As an educator, I have taught at The City College of New York, and various music schools and academies in New York and online as well as privately.
I love facilitating discoveries for new students. I believe that the best form of information retention comes from discovering something on your own, but it always helps to have someone nudge you in the right direction to put 2 and 2 together. I recall the rewarding feeling of sitting in classrooms or in lessons where things finally clicked for me or when I discovered a new idea, so I base my teaching method around this.
In addition to having taught guitar for over 10 years, I hold an undergraduate and graduate degree in performance, which comes with teaching experience at the college level as well. But many of my private students have been high school aged and middle school aged which has also given me a chance to find out what works with people of all ages.

First is getting an idea of what the student wants to do. It's improtant to figure this out first because if a teacher steers a student in the complete opposite direction of where they want to go, the student will lose all interest in the subject.
Afterwards, it's a matter of getting the student applying the lessons hands on as quickly as possible. Most people learn music because it is fun and they love listening to it, so why not make music? It is also much easier to explain theory concepts, if the student is interested, once there is music to analyze.
