About Paul
Hi! Ever since I started learning Spanish in an "Intro to Spanish" class in 8th grade, I have had a strong passion for languages. I speak Spanish, French, German, Japanese, and Portuguese, and I also have a good grasp of Italian, Swedish, and Dutch (and I have somewhat dabbled in Chinese as well through my knowledge of Chinese characters through Japanese). I completed a double bachelor's degree in Spanish and German Studies in 2014, including a minor in Japanese. I then completed a Master's in Spanish (Hispanic Literatures) in 2018, during which I was able to teach Spanish for the first time. Since graduating, I have taught language lessons online to many different people. Like I mentioned previously, I really love both learning and teaching languages and I look forward to sharing my passion for languages with you.
I really enjoy sharing all the language-related knowledge I have accumulated over the 24+ years since I started studying foreign languages with everyone who is interested in learning. I think being able to speak a foreign language is a gateway to interacting with native speakers of that language and the country (or countries) they reside in, as well as all the cultural, linguistic, and historic aspects that are unique to those people. Being able to communicate with someone in his/her native language is truly a remarkable experience, one that I would without reservation recommend to every single human being.
While I was working on my Master's in Spanish, I had the opportunity to teach beginning and intermediate Spanish college-level classes for five semesters, which included teaching four different classes. I really enjoyed my time teaching in a classroom setting, and this has set the stage for my transition to online teaching.

Getting to know each other is first priority, specifically determining the background that the student has in the subject in question. I also like to ask the student if he/she has any ideas or suggestions on how he/she would like to go about doing the lessons, as well as specific topics or areas of study that he/she would like to focus on first. Depending on the student's feedback, I would proceed to structure the lessons in a way that would best facilitate learning.
I have worked with both adults (of varying ages) and teenagers from different parts of the US. Some of my students have been non-native English speakers (although most of them spoke fluent English), and I even taught one lesson to a woman in Japan who was learning German.
Make sure you find someone you get along well with, someone who understands your needs and is patient with your mistakes and weaknesses in language learning. It is very important to be able to make a connection with your teacher; this will ensure a longer stretch of consecutive lessons and will help you learn at a pace that is comfortable for you.
I have very much enjoyed being able to watch anime (Japanese animation) with my older brother on a more-or-less regular basis. It is always something both he and I look forward to that time we get to spend together.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I would say that students can feel free to discuss their needs with me even without any forethought because I believe that the students' needs are extremely important and must be addressed in order to be able to progress through the lessons.
