  • 1) When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I’ve always had a natural interest in numbers from a young age, but my real interest in accounting developed during my Leaving Certificate. I was fortunate to have an excellent accounting teacher who made the subject engaging and practical, which really influenced my decision to pursue it further.
I went on to study Accounting and Finance in DCU and later completed a Masters in Accounting, eventually qualifying in both accounting and tax. My interest in tutoring developed alongside my studies—I started helping classmates and quickly realised I enjoyed explaining concepts and seeing others improve. From there, it grew into something I’ve now been doing for over 6 years.
  • 2) Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I teach both accounting and maths across all levels, from Junior Cycle and Leaving Certificate up to university level.
What I enjoy most is helping students see the progress they make themselves. I particularly like topics where students can see real progress quickly, such as exam questions, financial accounting, or core maths concepts that build confidence.

Like most students, some topics can feel more challenging or less engaging at first—especially areas that are more theory-heavy or require a lot of practice—but I see those as opportunities to make the material clearer and more approachable.
  • 3) Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

Yes, my Leaving Certificate accounting teacher had a big impact on me. They had a great ability to explain complex topics in a simple way and made the subject feel very manageable.
That experience definitely influenced how I approach tutoring now—I try to create the same kind of environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and can build confidence in their abilities.
  • 4) What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

A good tutor needs to be patient, approachable, and adaptable. Every student learns differently, so it’s important to tailor explanations to suit their needs rather than using a one-size-fits-all approach.
I also think clarity is key—being able to break down complex topics into simple steps makes a huge difference. On top of that, encouraging students and building their confidence is just as important as covering the material itself.

Finally, reliability and support outside of lessons help students feel they’re not on their own when studying.
  • 5) Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school

I remember during my Leaving Certificate, there was a point where a lot of students found certain accounting topics quite difficult and overwhelming. What made the difference for me was breaking those topics down into smaller, manageable steps and practicing consistently.
That experience stuck with me, and it’s something I now apply when tutoring—once a student understands the structure of a problem and practices it step by step, their confidence improves very quickly.
  • 6) What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

Even though I’ve always been comfortable with numbers, some areas—especially at university level—required a deeper level of understanding and consistent practice.
Balancing theory with application was one of the main challenges, particularly in accounting and tax. Over time, I developed strategies to approach problems more effectively, and that’s something I now pass on to my students to help them avoid the same difficulties.
  • 7) Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I’d say it’s a combination of both. I really enjoy teaching and helping students achieve their goals, especially when they gain confidence in a subject they previously found difficult.
Outside of academics, I also have a keen interest in sports, both playing and watching. I think that interest has helped shape my approach to tutoring—there’s a strong parallel between improving in sport and improving in subjects like maths and accounting, where consistent practice, the right techniques, and building confidence over time make a big difference.
  • 8) What makes you a Superprof (besides answering these interview questions :-P) ?

I think what sets me apart is my experience across both education and industry. I’ve been tutoring for over 6 years across all levels, while also working professionally in accounting and tax, which gives me a strong practical understanding of the subjects I teach.
I focus on both understanding and results, ensuring students not only improve their grades but also feel confident in the material. I’m very approachable and always available to support students outside of lessons if needed.

My goal is to make each lesson clear, effective, and tailored to the individual student so they can achieve the best possible outcome.
