About Gretchen

I LOVE teaching! I've been teaching flute students for over 30 years. From beginners to advanced, kids and adults.

I have a bachelor's degree in Flute performance and have played professionally in symphony orchestras, chamber groups and jazz and pop bands, too! I've recorded some cartoon music for Disney and was lucky enough to tour Europe with a wind ensemble.

I make sure my students get a great foundation in flute technique, but additionally, my students have fun playing many different styles of music, not just classical.

I love watching students work hard and reach their goals. It's so gratifying to see students light up when they can finally do that "thing" they've been working toward.

About the lesson

I make sure to get to know new students, both their goals and interests. I make sure they are comfortable with the goals we set out together and make a plan to reach those goals. I make sure we have a good rapport and good communication.

Perfect! Gretchen is highly experienced, and she has really helped me to up my game as an adult flutist. I have struggled particularly with proper breathing technique, and she has been very patient (but very firm!) about helping me to overcome this problem. She does not skip the basics, but she provides many opportunities to try new songs and styles that I might have never selected for myself. It is never a boring lesson with Gretchen! I highly recommend her.

Perfect! She was accommodating with assigned work and music for my band. Hand positioning, for me, is a struggle, but she is patient and makes sure that I know when I do something correctly/when I make progress on something. Overall, I strongly recommend getting lessons with her.

My daughter was really getting frustrated with flute because she couldn’t play some high notes like high E and F#. Gretchen not only helped her learn to play the higher notes but she’s loving flute again. Gretchen has really helped her overcome her challenges and be a better player.
