About Kathy
I am a credentialed teacher with 10 years of classroom experience. I majored in English Literature with a minor in Creative Writing, so if you need any help with essays, literary analysis, or any type of writing, I can help you.
My credential is for K-5, and most of my classroom experience is with Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades. If you are a student in need of foundational principles, I can help you with that, too.
Regardless of your age or your need, if you are struggling with your reading and/or writing, I can work with you to help you get caught up and feel more confident about your ability.
I love helping students discover their love of learning. We all have things that we are passionate about. My goal is to help students use those passions to help them with their reading and writing skills.
Learning should be fun. It should be engaging, interesting, and thought provoking. My style is casual and based on conversation that leads to understanding. The whole point is for YOU to figure it out. I am just the person that is leading you to your ah-ha moment.
I attended Concordia University in Irvine, where I received a BA in Liberal Studies and a Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. I have experience in all grades PreK-5, and taught extensively in Kindergarten, 2nd, and 4th grades. I also have 5 years of experience working in Special Needs PreSchool. I have taught children of varying strengths and abilities, and believe in finding whatever method of learning works best for each child.
I also attended Cal. State University in Long Beach and majored in English Literature, with a minor in Creative Writing. Some of my favorite literary subjects are Shakespeare, Virginia Woolf, the Modern era poets and authors, Catcher in the Rye, and To Kill a Mockingbird. I approach literary analysis from an historical perspective and use the events of the time a piece was written in order to better understand it.

The first thing we will do is get to know each other. I will ask you questions about school, your teacher, and what you are hoping to gain from our time together. I will also ask you questions about you! What you like to do outside of school, or what your hobbies are, can help me find ways to help you better. My job is to find your strengths and help you use them to become the best student you can be.
I believe in being casual in our meetings. Conversation, questions, thinking out loud, and making our learning experience fun will help us make our time together more productive.
I have worked with many different kinds of students with every level of ability, and I have found one thing to be true: labels do not define you.
I have worked with students who were labeled as “special needs” who worked harder, remained more positive, and had greater achievements than anyone thought they were capable of. I have also worked with students who were underestimated because English was their second language who won academic and achievement awards in reading and writing. I have also helped students who were labeled as “gifted” who were struggling with burnout and boredom to rediscover their passion for learning. In all of these cases, what these students had in common was the desire to love what they were doing in school; we just had to figure out how to find that passion for each student in their own, individual way.

My rate is $40 per hour, which is paid 24 hours prior to our scheduled meeting. I will be on time, and ask that students be on time as well. My time is valuable, as is yours, so if you are late, our time together will only be our scheduled time, and will be charged in full.
If you cannot make it to our meeting, you must text me AT LEAST 1 HOUR prior to our meeting time to reschedule for a different date, or to get a full refund. Late cancellation, less than an hour before our scheduled time, will result in a partial refund of $20. Failure to notify me of a cancellation before our scheduled time to meet, or a no-show, will not be refunded.
