I am TEFL certified, OFQUAL level 5, and have worked with students who are ESL learners changing over to the IGCSE syllabus from their native home syllabus. This means that they need to reach the level of their peers in a short period of time. I give them strategies to learn some of them academic and some part of real life learning.
When it comes to writing, I treat it like a science, with a clear step by step approach to going from writing an impactful topic sentence to linking paragraphs.

I speak to them about their language goals. Give them a general diagnostic test based on the level they say they are and then advice them on their course of action. Over the course of teaching I understand how an individual student learns and modify teaching techniques to suit their requirement.
