About Chelsea

I have a master's degree in writing and publishing and several years' experience working in the field. I'm familiar with different style guides and communicate well with others.

I love the written word and English, with all its strange quirks. And I love helping people realize that writing and English isn't as complicated as it seems! Once you know the tricks, you know what rules you can break.

Working with the patients at the mental health hospital was a delight and I loved running groups with them where we had not only standard "group" discussions, but also other topics they might be interested in.

Master's degree in publishing and writing, undergrad degree in psychology and English literature. I spent three years working with adolescents in a mental health hospital, where I frequently wrote, taught, and led groups.

About the lesson

I begin by getting to know the student and learning how they learn best. And then I try to get some idea of their level and what they need help with specifically. Then we work together to understand what works best for them.

I've worked primarily with students from 13 to 18, with a little experience with younger children.

Find someone who works like you do—do you like a sense of humor? Are you more comfortable with women, men, nonbinary, or otherwise? I think being comfortable with a person is most important. Otherwise, look for someone enthusiastic about their work. Being tutored by someone who knows math isn't as successful as someone who loves math! (Not me. I don't love math!)

I accidentally scheduled a family Zoom call for Easter (forgetting entirely that it was Easter!), but my sister, brother-in-law, parents, and I got to talk for over an hour. It was wonderful!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Try to identify what you need. Sometimes it's difficult to understand what you don't understand, but if you can articulate the things you're struggling with and the things you're trying, teachers will be better able to help you identify what you need.
