About Kelly
Hello there!
I am a graduate student at the University of Utah studying English. I also teaching college writing and English. I love writing and literature, but if you struggle to love these subjects, no worries. I can help make them rewarding and painless. My teaching philosophy is to meet students on their level, and to differentiate my plans to meet individual wants and needs.
My teaching experience includes working at a tutoring center in my hometown of Las Vegas, serving as a Writing Colleague and a Writing Fellow at HWS Colleges, and substitute teaching. I am passionate about preparing high school students for college level writing, as well as helping college students achieve success with writing in any subject.
I am also a creative writer, and I've attended prestigious workshops such as the Kenyon Review, where I had the opportunity to workshop my pieces with other writers. My fiction has been published in several literary magazines.
If you are a student looking to improve your writing (at any age or any level), then I am the tutor for you. Come to me at any stage in the writing process -- planning, drafting, revising, you name it! -- and I will be happy to help take your writing to the next level. Whether you have a big paper due for school, or are hard at work on a college application essay, I would love to help.
Sound good? Send me a message! I'm looking forward to talking with you.
Writing, reading, and communicating are crucial skills. It makes me feel fulfilled when I can help students become more comfortable and confident in themselves as writers, readers, speakers, etc. I know that writing in particular can feel quite intimidating to a lot of students, and I find great joy in helping them feel a little better.
I've been volunteering as an assistant in classrooms since I was a teenager, but I started teaching writing as a Writing Teaching Assistant and later a Writing Tutor through my college's writing center. Since working at the writing center, I've continued to work as a writing tutor in addition to tutoring reading to elementary school students, substitute teaching, and teaching at the college level.
I'm working on my Ph. D in English, and I work as a college writing instructor at the University of Utah. While my focus now is on college writing, I've worked with students on all ages on mutliple types of writing.

I let my students take the lead and create flexible lessons to meet the individual needs of each student. I'm interested in hearing about your past experiences with writing and setting goals for our sessions. I can help you with any step of the writing process -- you can come to me with completed work or at the very beginning of a project, and I can help you take the next steps toward improving your writing.
I have worked with many types of students -- adults seeking graduate degrees, working professionals, college students of all levels, K-12 students, students with specialized learning needs. No matter who you are or what you're working on, I'd love the opportunity to help you become a more confident writer.
Talking about writing and sharing writing with others can often make you feel vulnerable. Above all, choose someone you think you'll feel comfortable with. It's important that you can be honest with your teacher when you're struggling, so your comfort should be your first priority. That said, most writing teachers I know are kind and eager to make you feel like a good writer, so don't be afraid!
Recently I got to visit my hometown of Las Vegas to celebrate my father's birthday. I enjoyed spending time with my family in the desert sun!
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What parts of the writing process are most challenging for me?
What resources might be helpful to show my teacher in order for her to help me to the best of her ability?
