Set Your Child Up for Long-term Academic and Career Success—Sign Them Up Now for Oxford-style Writing Tutorials with an Award-Winning Former Professor

Are you the parent of a high school student? It goes without saying that you want the best for your child. You want them to beat out the competition and get into a great college. You want them to excel there academically. And you want them to go on to have a rewarding career. But it's hard to know how to help your child maximize their chances.

You've learned from hard-won experience that so much of getting ahead in life depends on other people. To get what we want in life, we have to persuade others to help us achieve it. In many life and work situations, the key medium of persuasion is writing.

That includes school. The further your child advances academically, the more writing well is the key to success, even in disciplines like science or technology. Consider all the forms of writing, beyond academic essays and research papers, they may be expected to produce during their future career: cover letters, resumes, emails, memos, presentations, technical papers, articles, blog posts, or even books.

One thing you definitely can do, right now, is to encourage your child to master how to write persuasively. Like most high-level skills, to get really good at writing, they need to commit to improving every day. But they may dread writing. They may find class writing assignments boring or pointless. And to make matters worse, their writing may not be getting enough attention from their teachers at school, who have to divide their attention among many students and many other learning objectives.

Having an accomplished writing coach at your child's side can help tremendously. The investment you make in a coach who can help your child achieve excellence in writing will pay rich dividends now and later.

I will be that coach. I know what it takes to achieve excellence in academic writing. I'm a former college professor and an award-winning, published author. I have years of success teaching writing at all levels to students from diverse backgrounds, including those who are non-native speakers of English.

I can help your child overcome self-doubt and lack of motivation to become a confident, inspired writer, a writer who not only achieves high grades but also moves readers with compelling prose. Your child deserves to find their writing voice.

Here's how the tutoring I offer works: Each meeting your child and I have together will be an Oxford-style tutorial. That means we'll explore together the craft of writing through the close reading of their writing and through conversation. I will lavish attention on your child's writing and provide constructive criticism. This feedback will help your child identify and enhance their writing strengths, while overcoming their weaknesses.

There are three steps:

Two days before we meet, your child submits a piece of writing to me through Google Docs.

I write a detailed response, including line-by-line commentary.

We meet online via Skype or Google Hangouts for an hour. During that time, we have a conversation about the piece of writing. This may include writing exercises we do together on the spot. For the next meeting, I may assign revisions—or we'll move on to a new piece of writing.

Through this process, your child will:

clarify their thinking

unleash their creativity

learn how to move a reader

find their writing voice.

My No Worries Guarantee

If you and your child commit to the process, I guarantee their writing will improve dramatically. Grades will go up. They'll feel less stressed and more confident in their writing. They'll learn to write persuasively about complex topics with both intellectual rigor and originality. If you're not happy with the results, I'll refund your investment.

I love to write and to teach writing. I hold a PhD in English from the University of London. An essay of mine won a prestigious award from the top scholarly society in my field, science studies. In 2013, The University of Michigan Press published by my doctoral thesis, entitled, The Cultural Currency of String Theory as a Scientific Imaginary.

In 2008, I published an edited collection of creative writing inspired by string theory, called Riffing on Strings. It won an Independent Publisher Book Award and got a glowing full-page review in The New Scientist. Abbas Raza, the founder of 3 Quarks Daily, said, "Miller’s erudite introduction by itself is worth the price of this sparkling collection." I've had a monthly column at PopMatters.com and published articles on AlterNet and Salon.com that went viral.

I'm certified by Cambridge University to teach English as a foreign language (CELTA). I've taught composition successfully to students at all levels and from diverse backgrounds at colleges in the US and Asia.

I firmly believe that Oxford-style tutorials are the most effective way to reap rapid progress in your child's writing skills. Great athletes have coaches. Great writers need them too.
