About Tierni

I enjoy seeing students of all ages succeed, and equipping them with the tools and knowledge to do so.

I started gaining exposure to teaching by working in day camps for nature center programs throughout the summer, where I would teach youth about ecology and wildlife through environmental education. Some years later, I applied for a part-time special education paraprofessional position within my old school district, and I there I remained for four years.

I have a Bachelor's degree in Wildlife Management from Unity College, where I also spent 3 years at the Learning Resource Center as a Writing Tutor for college-level students. I would provide academic support by assisting students in internship and scholarship essay applications, lab reports, technical writing, and creative writing. I also have 4 years of experience as a special education paraprofessional at the middle school level, as well as behavior technician training for students with ASD, and I am currently an in-person tutor for elementary to high school aged students. I specialize in English, Literacy, Reading, Composition, and the like.

About the lesson

Get to know the new student, and meet them where they are at. Pair with them and ensure that they see me as synonymous with positivity. Praise and positively reinforce often for desired behaviors.

I have worked with students who have various disabilities, sometimes multiple disabilities, students with ASD, and children of all ages from 3 years old to 14 years old.

Have your questions prepared, and show an effort to take your studies and your extra tutoring support seriously. At the same time, have a positive attitude and be willing to accept that often times in Literature, there is no "wrong" answer as long as you have evidence to support your or the author's perspective.

A recent event I am fond of is when I traveled to Yellowstone National Park for the first time this summer, and got to see a wild wolf!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
There is no such thing as a "dumb" question. If a student doesn't understand, they just don't understand. Teachers should be willing to listen to the needs of their students. Students should think through whether others are also asking the same question, because there is power in learning in a unanimous group. Students at the same time should focus on attainable goals, and also focus on the habits that will lead them to achieve those goals.
