About Blake

I am an experienced tutor of 2 years. I have tutored many different age groups, grade levels, subjects, and capabilities. I have worked in-person and online. I have a B.A. in English from California State University - Long Beach and am working on my M.F.A. from Columbia University. I am a transplant from California recently moved to New York. I am excited to instill in my students a love of learning and a thirst for knowledge. I also tutor other grade-school subjects like math, science, and history. Due to the pandemic, I am currently only accepting remote students (for their safety and mine).

About the lesson

As a tutor teaching writing (for example), I will first have to evaluate the student's writing ability. If they have a sample of their writing, I will look over this. If not, I will give them a prompt to which they will have a limited amount of time to respond. Taking their grade level or year in college into account, I will then look over the essay with them, checking for their approach to writing. After this, if they have any homework assignments, I will have them begin to write a first draft for these assignments. If the assignment is a persuasive essay, for example, the student will begin their first draft by doing a freewrite on both sides of the argument to determine which side they favor. After reviewing the freewriting, with my guidance, the student will begin to construct the rest of their essay step by step. They will have a limited amount of time to complete this as well. I will then look over the results of this checking for grammar and spelling errors, sentence and paragraph construction, and soundness of logic. As I go through their essay, I will ask the student leading questions about the essay so that they come up with the corrections themselves instead of me editing it alone. If there is any confusion as to what I am asking or how the essay might be improved, I will try to make the question more personal to the student. I will also try to do the same for the prompt when I initially give it to them. For example, one of the students I tutored in the past was not connecting to the prompts that I had previously come up with. These were very general prompts, pulled from the internet. To combat this, I asked him what his two favorite video games were and had him write me a persuasive essay about them.
