About Rebecca

My mother was a teacher.  I grew up watching her and sometimes helping her in the classroom.  In my teens, I started working in a childcare center.  The first time I decided I wanted to be a teacher was while I was working at Fraser in an autism classroom.  Since that time, my passion has only grown.  I have discovered a great love for teaching reading as a tutor in the past 7 years.

My father is an author and publisher.  I have had the privilege of working with him on his research.  He taught me the value of research and the value of words.  He taught me the value of a good story.  I enjoy writing in my free time.

I have over 20 years of experience working both in the classroom and as a private tutor.  I have worked as a tutor and undone training through AMericorp.  I have a BA in Psychology from Augsburg University and several graduate credits towards my masters in education.  I have undergone several trainings.  I am certified as an Orton-Gillingham reading tutor.  I have experience working with all academic levels.

The first part of my tutoring process is getting some information about my student from a caregiver.  I like to map out a plan and get an idea what is the most important subjects to focus on, strengths and weaknesses.

Next I will meet with the student.  I will get to know them.  I will learn what the student likes and dislikes.  This can be helpful in knowing how the student likes to learn.  If the student likes art, I many use more visual tools to teach and more color.

In the beginning, I find it important to assess where the student is at academically.  This is especially helpful when I am using the Orton-Gillingham approach to reading.  I want to know what phonograms they know.  I want to get an idea of the student's reading level and reading fluency.  For math, I want to know what basic facts they know and how good the student's number sense is.

Lastly, I will discuss with the parents my pricing system, how many sessions I feel the student needs, the length of sessions, and the number of times per week I would like to see the student.  I discuss my observations of the students academic strengths and weaknesses.  I build a plan with the student's goals and share with the parent what a typical session will look like.  I ask for their input.

I have worked with students pre-k through middle school.  I have worked with students of all abilities.  I enjoy working with students that have special needs, but am just as comfortable with students at grade level.

I would tell a student looking to hire a teacher that the student is in charge of his/her own education.  Students can decide what is helpful and what is not in a tutor.  I would tell the student to consider exactly what the student wants and needs in a teacher before the first meeting.

I recently had a student ask me to teach his children some day.  It was a huge compliment to me.  I knew at that point he was getting something out of it.  This particular student has a learning disability.  He was unable to decode and encode simple three letter words.  His reading level has gone from a G, less than a year ago, to an O.  His recent IEP showed his test scores have gone from meetings his goals 25% of the time to 75%.  I am so proud of our three years together.  I love watching how proud he is of his accomplishments.
