About Hilary

RISE & Shine Tutoring Services is focused on Responding to the needs of each learner* Individualize instruction to meet the needs of each learner* Set realistic goals* Evaluate & check for understanding to inform instruction. As a dual-certified educator in English Language Arts and Special Education with a Masters in Adolescent Education, I have spent the past 15 years in the NY area using student-centered literacy strategies and interest-based learning that makes students collaborative & valued partners in all areas of reading, writing, speaking & listening.

Being an integral partner in the learning process---however we get there----is about as good as it gets. When I see students having an "ah ah" moment and have something really sink in," is the fuel that keeps this academic engine running.....there's nothing better!

I have dual certification in English Language Arts and Students with Disabilities with a Masters of Science in Adolescent Education. I have been an English teacher, a Special Education teacher, a Co-teacher, an advisor, a tutor, a writer-in-residence conducting poetry workshops for agencies that provide day habilitation services for special need children and adults, a writer for The New York Times, specializing in writing profiles on people in the arts and education.

About the lesson

Just like a really good recipe that creates positive sensory memories, I approach this partnership with students using a variety of ingredients that leave learners satisfied, appreciated, and excited for what's next. I believe that the most effective way to begin this partnership starts with "the conversation." Since speaking and listening are the cornerstones of literacy, getting to know one another (sharing who we are, what we like to do, what we don't like to do, what helps us and learn and what doesn't) is key before any learning takes place. Feeling safe, trusting the process and the facilitator of this process, must be established since only then can productive and meaningful engagement set the stage for a positive learning environment.

Details

I have reasonable rates for 30 minute, 60 minute and 90 minute sessions, beginning at $40 for 30 minute sessions, $70 for 60 minute sessions and $100 for 90 minute sessions. I work seven days a week and try my hardest to accommodate clients with days and times that work best for them.
