About Juan

My experience with English and Spanish language reading, writing, and editing in both formal and informal contexts gives me the ability to teach you the language.

My perspective on flexibility in learning styles, as well as an approachable demeanor that facilitates learning for all kinds, is what allows me to do it well.

I am a 31-year-old native Spanish speaker from Argentina that learned English at 7 years old upon moving to the states. There, I fell in love with storytelling in both languages, and have followed that passion into a career of studying literature, language, and culture in service of telling a story.

I've worked as a filmmaker, a Dept. of Education parent liaison, and as a quality assurance analyst for video-game localization.

I enjoy sharing the things I know, and collaboratively exploring what there is to know about a subject. It can be easy to think you have a full perspective just because you know a thing; sharing and teaching that perspective can open you up to unexpected lines of reasoning, and seeing someone else learn what you know is very fulfilling.

I come from a long line of teachers, and frequently assisted my mother's after-school tutoring efforts. I enjoy the spark of understanding that learning brings about, and have found an opportunity for helping others find that spark throughout my many jobs as an adult.

Much of my education started informally, which is common for immigrants to the US. However, my passion for writing led me to study and examine both English and Spanish throughout my entire life.

I studied filmmaking and English at St. John's University, where I obtained my bachelor's degree, and worked as a Parent Coordinator for the Spanish-speaking population of Queens NY as a part of the Dept. of Education's Pre-K For All program.

Since moving to California, I've worked on localization for Japanese video-games, which advanced my proficiency with English and gave me an eye for detail.

It's important for both of us to establish a comfortable rapport, which can usually be done through a friendly introduction and conversation.

Once we're both comfortable being humans in front of one another, I'll ask some questions about your experience with the subject, as well as your experience  and preferences when learning in general. Also, your proficiency in the subject will be important, so we'll talk about that.

Finally, I like to ask why the student is learning, and their expectations about doing so. This can help manage expectations and establish the tone with which I'll approach teaching. I think learning is fun, but if you don't think so, it's not useful to either of us to force that fun.

I haven't had any formal students yet, but I've worked with grades 7-9 as well as adults in an unofficial capacity, such as assisting my mother's tutoring service in high school, or presenting parent workshops for parents of pre-k students.

Put aside your desire to achieve an outcome (knowledge/expertise) and focus on the exercise of learning and reinforcing that learning.

Learning is its own skill, and to learn what you want to learn effectively, you must apply your skills in learning.

While working as a parent coordinator, I gave a simple workshop on the importance of early childhood dentistry. Sometime after the workshop, I was approached by a father who was wondering if I could help him get a dentist appointment for himself.

He explained that he was deathly afraid of dentists, but that after we helped him get his daughter an appointment, she had shown him that this fear is surmountable.

I was able to connect him with a free clinic with basic dentistry services, sent him on his way, and frankly forgot about it. The daughter finished out the school year, and I saw her and her father at the small graduation ceremony the school held.

"Daddy smiling!" And he was, with a mouthful of braces and a father's pride. That was nice.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What level of knowledge am I looking for?

What goals am I hoping to achieve with this knowledge?

What expectations or preferences do I have on the frequency and pace of lessons?

This depends on the subject level. For K-6 students, prices will likely range from $15-$20 per hour. For grades 7-12, prices will average $20-$30 per hour.

Unfortunately, I can not give a definite quote until I know what the subject matter I'll be tutoring is.
