About Nichole

I have been homeschooling my children for the last 9 years. I have experience working as a small group teacher with students with special learning needs. Over the last year, I have worked with The Sunshine Method as a tutor and currently, I am working on my degree in Exceptional Student Education.

I began teaching 9 years ago when I started homeschooling my children. I have always wanted to be a teacher and finally began going back to school last year so that I could have the degree to go with my experience.

I am currently working towards my Exceptional Student Education degree. I am an experienced homeschooling instructor and tutor. I have also worked in a private school environment with small group instruction and teaching electives courses.

About the lesson

I liked to spend the first day of tutoring getting to know my new student. First, I typically administer a brief assessment in the area where the student would like more help. Second, I take the student through an evaluation of their learning style to see how I can best help them to learn. Third, I develop a plan to begin their tutoring. I listen to the student, caregiver, and the student's teachers to help discover the best way to help each student.

My main focus has always been working with children with special needs. I began working over 20 years ago in group homes with adults with various exceptionalities and that helped to prepare me for my own sons. My sons both had a severe speech delay which lead to learning disabilities as they grew older. I felt that the public school was not the right environment for them to thrive as they continued to delay or remove help from them, that's when I began homeschooling. I worked for a year under a special needs teacher and advocate in our community who started a private school that specialized in helping students with special needs. I was able to teach my own small groups and also teach electives classes in the school. I began tutoring on my own the following year and most of my students have had several learning disabilities as well. I enjoy working with kids who just need a little bit of encouragement to shine in their abilities.

If you are a parent looking for a teacher for your child with special needs, make sure that there is more to their experience than head knowledge that they learned while in college. They should have several years of experience in the field working with kids with special needs in some way, even if it's not in the classroom.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
I always ask my students what subject is the most fun to them and why. I also ask my students what subject is the hardest for them and why. Think about teachers who you really liked and what they did to help you understand a concept and relay that to your tutor.

My prices are as follows:

Homework Support (student needs help completing homework during the week and staying on task to complete) - $25/hour

Subject Area Support (student needs help in a specific subject area and will require me to create lessons) - $35/hour

Significant Support (student has IEP or is severely behind in a subject area. Will require me to work with teachers and create lessons) - $45/hour

Late Cancellation - (cancellation with less than 4 hours notice) - Full price of agreed tutoring

Early Cancellation - no fee
