About Marit

Trying to fill a blank page can be scary. I help students gain confidence in their writing while improving their writing skills. I love passing on my passion for english to my students and giving them tools to use for the rest of their lives. Though developing a student's writing ability is my main goal, in the process I give them the necessary skills to succeed in any area of school and beyond. No matter what level a student is at, I can help them improve their time management, punctuation, syntax, and any other area they may struggle with. I meet my students wherever they're at in their reading and writing and help them recognize their potential, while instilling in them a newfound love for the written word.

I'm versed in all areas of writing, including english essays, articles, AP tests, college essays, research papers, historical writing, practical writing, scientific papers, and more.

I love working with all ages and ability levels. I've worked with a variety of students in the past, but I especially enjoy working with students who are struggling in English and may be hesitant to seek help from a tutor. I've found such students to be the most rewarding, as over our time together they start to recognize their own potential and may even begin to enjoy the writing process. I help students see the progess they've made over our time together and give them the extra time and encouragement they need to succeed.

I first started tutoring my younger sister, who is severly dyslexic. After working together I discovered how much I loved tutoring and began to offer my services to others.

I've loved reading and writing ever since I can remember.
I've been a straight A student since high school and won two Gold Keys and an honorable mention for pieces I entered in the Scholastic Art and Writing Awards by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers. I earned my BA in Psychology at CU Boulder, where I used many of my elective credits to take english and literature classes. I was a nanny for 10 years, working with children of all ages, and have been tutoring english for 7 years.

About the lesson

Typically when working with a new student, I ask for a sample of writing so that I can gauge their skill level and what areas we need to work on. I also like to speak with both the student and a parent so we can discuss an action plan that everyone can agree on. Depending on the student's age, a parent may not need to be present. During our first meeting, we will go over their writing sample and talk about what they want help with, what areas they want to improve, their goals, etc. Whether a student just needs extra help with homework and school assignments, or wants to work on their skills outside of school, I tailor our time together to meet the needs of each individual student.

I have worked with students of all ages, ability levels, and with a number of students who have had learning differences, ranging from mild to severe. I've also worked with students who are resistant to recieving outside help.

I would suggest trying out a number of different teachers before deciding who to start working with. It's important for a student to click with their instructor and they may improve more with someone they enjoy being with. Seeking out someone who has experience in whatever area the student is struggling in can also be beneficial.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Depending on the student's age, they should consider their goals and what areas they most want to improve in before discussing with their teacher. The more specific a student can be about their needs, the more time a teacher can devote to actually addressing those needs.

Details

I typically charge $40 an hour for tutoring and will recommend how many times a week I would like to work with your student to achieve the best results. However, if you would rather meet more or less times than I recommend, I am happy to be flexible. For those who may struggle to pay my fee, I am willing to negotiate.
