About Karyn

I focus on essay writing in my tutoring. Through my time studying English at UMBC, I've had practice writing several different styles of essays, including research papers, creative non-fiction essays, expository papers, argumentative papers, etc. I offer guidance specific to the art of essay writing, helping students to structure their ideas and sentences, make efficient and powerful word choices, and use their authentic voices through it all. I have participiated in peer review through my time in college, and I have edited my peers' papers, improving their letter grades. I am well-trained in grammar, including syntax, punctuation, sentence structure, and more. I help students write not only in a grammatically correct way, but in an engaging way.

I am passionate about helping others formulate their own thoughts in meaningful ways on the page. There is nothing quite as satisfying as finding the right words to say what you want to say. While essay writing may seem mundane and difficult, I like to see it as an artistic and personal creation. I am passionate about helping others see it that way, too. It is an opportunity to bring words and ideas together to write something that no one else has written.

I am graduating with a Bachelors in English: Communication and Technology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County. I have studied everything from English Composition to Expository Writing, and from English Grammar to Creative Nonfiction. I have participated in peer reviews throughout my college experience, and I have received one-on-one writing guidance from numerous professors. I have edited peers' papers, helping them improve their grade by a whole letter in their writing classes.

About the lesson

I like to start working with a new student by learning a little bit about them. I like to learn about their favorite school subjects, their hobbies, and their interests in general. After all, there is a unique person behind every paper. Then I like to know what the student's goals are for their writing and their assignments. I like to work with them to lay out a "game-plan" -- a step-by-step process we can follow together to help them achieve their goals through the tutoring process.

My advice would be to hire a teacher who will show a personal interest in your advancement and growth. It is easy to find someone who can impart the skills and knowledge of a certain subject to you, but it is harder to find someone who will genuinely invest in you. The best teachers I have had have been those who, beyond giving me knowledge, they showed me that they cared. Their care for me helped to draw out the best in me when it came to my academics and projects. When a teacher truly cares about your development, it will boost your ability and desire to learn and apply the knowledge they offer you.
