About Andres
Exceedingly high quality of service. I have a PhD in English literature from the University of Chicago-- my specific field was Medieval Literature, but I taught classes in 20th century literature, cinema and media studies, critical theory, philosophy, and psychoanalysis.
I spent several years working exclusively and directly with undergraduate writing. I taught in the Writing Program at the University of Chicago, helping students improve the quality of their essays. I directed Creative Writing final projects, in both poetry and fiction.
Whether you are looking to improve your essays, receive ongoing assistance in reading or writing, or edit a longer project, I can help you.
I am also fluent in English and Spanish.
I began teaching symbolic logic and Spanish as an undergraduate. I went on to teach in a high school in Madrid, while on a Fulbright Scholarship. From there, I decided to get a PhD in English literature, and spent the better part of a decade teaching in various capacities (as a teaching assistant, as a standalone teacher, as a BA preceptor, etc.).

A lot of tutoring work depends on developing trust between tutor and student, and helping students gain confidence in the process of writing. Successful tutoring requires:
(a) Encountering the student at their level. One has to figure out their specific background, and their strengths and weaknesses -- what they are already doing well, what they are trying to do better. Only doing so can a tutor help students progress from what they already doing well to the kind of work they wish they were doing.
(b) Offering students concrete techniques to help them better organize their language and thoughts. Seeing improvement in their writing and reading skills from the start helps students become motivated to keep improving.
(c) Above all, giving students the gift of focused, undivided attention. No list of formulas or procedures can elide the importance of attending to the very specific ways a student thinks, writes, or retains information; what specific goals they have in mind; and what learning process works best for them.
All kinds! I've worked with high school students, college students, and occasionally even with graduate students (editing dissertations). I've worked with students from underprivileged backgrounds and students from very wealthy backgrounds. I've worked with Americans and with international students.
In fact, I am currently teaching classes at the UNAM, the National University of Mexico -- which is a very different kind of university than the University of Chicago, where I spent ten years of my life.
