About Nicholas

Hello!

I am a private tutor who specializes in English literature and language. I was a teacher for two years before transitioning to a full-time tutor in all subjects for middle and high school students. Prior to that, I worked in a variety of fields related to industrial/energy manufacturing and commercial real estate sales and construction.

My background gives me a unique perspective on education and its application in the real world, which allows me to engage with students on more than just a superficial level.

I am located in Wyoming and believe in the value of hard work and the power of determination. This is something I try to instill in my students. Every person is capable of success in every school subject and tutor sessions are tailored to the individual based on their classroom needs. I do not do your student's homework for them. I demand dedication and an attitude of self-improvement. Together, we can push through barriers and walk the path of subject mastery.

The best part of my job is not helping a student to master a subject area, but to become the type of person who cares about improving themselves. This is not limited to education. When a student can identify an actual life goal and not some nebulous one (be happy, be succesful), it is a powerful moment. I hope to help them be the type of person to identify the costs of those goals and give them the proper attitude and focus to achieve them.

I began teaching due to my frustration with my own childrens' teachers and the bureaucracy of the modern school system. Teachers are stretched too thin and classroom sizes have ballooned. Individuals are getting left behind and students are funneled from school to school to college with no consideration, intentional planning, or individual agency. You and your student are in control of your lives and should be in control of your education as well. When I saw this deficit in the system I knew I had to get involved.

I have my degree in English and in Secondary Education, but I have two years of teaching all subjects at a Middle School level. For high school students, I have three years of tutoring English specifically. This includes literature, grammar, and essay planning, writing, and editing. I also have experience with college and career planning as well as SAT/ACT practice test administration and review.

Initial tutor session is onboarding, where I meet with your student to discuss their roadblocks and their goals. This is supplemented with emails from students and/or parents regarding specific issues or content areas that need addressing. Once those issues are identified and introductions are made, I will meet with your student as often as we agree but no less than twice per month. Prior to sessions, I will send reminder emails for documentation, worksheets, essays, labs, reading, lectures, etc. to review so I can develop a discussion/lesson plan. Each session will conclude with a plan of action to help your student make meaningful change in the classroom.

I have worked with ultra-wealthy students, Title 1 students, exceptionally gifted students, and students with learning challenges. Some have been elite athletes, some valedictorians, some virtuosos, some entrepreneurs and small business creators, and some who attend trade school or join apprenticeships. While this may be hard to hear, not every student should attend college. I do not advise higher education as mandatory or axiomatic. What use is a degree and debt to a student who has interests and talent in the trades? Everyone is unique, and between parents and students, life goals can be set and plans to achieve them laid.

Regardless of whether you hire me, it is important that you understand the demands of your tutor. Some are flexible and some are rigid. Some guide your student and some do the work for them. Some will demand attitude and excellence from your students and some will bend to their whims. Every student is capable of success, but not every tutor will share your ambition for your student. More so than PhD's and number of students, you must find the tutor who will drive your student to mastery. This is not 'area of expertise' dependent, as most students seeking tutoring are also looking for someone to give them drive and direction.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Something to keep in mind is your child's sensitivity. A good tutor should be able to adapt to this while not compromising their structure. Another is your child's Central Nervous System (CNS) load coupled with recovery. Proper sleep habits go a long way to helping keep a student focused during school and tutoring. For example, a high school student with a full AP schedule load who competes in varsity sports and has an after-school job will need to prioritize recovery. Tutoring must be carefully woven in so as not to overburden an already taxed CNS.
