About Ora
Former (tenured) English and Film Studies professor/author at NC-State University (12 years, from 2008 - 2021), Dartmouth College, University of California, Irvine, and Tulane University. I have a Ph.D. in English Literature and Film/Media Studies from the University Chicago (2003). I am now teaching high school, but up until just a couple months ago, I taught (for over twenty years) English and World Literature and writing to college students. I have also taught and tutored high school students in English and World Literature, writing, grammar, and college essays. I am especially experienced in working with students on writing essays and on improving their writing skills. I love working with adolescents (approximately ages 13 - 19), and can help students through every stage of the writing process: getting words onto the page, coming up with ideas, closely analyzing texts, structuring their argument, finding their "voice" (for analytical essay assignments, college essays, creative nonfiction, autobiographical writing, etc.), finding and incorporating quotations and evidence into their argument, revision, punctuation, vocabulary, sentence and paragraph structure, and grammar. I have also had a lot of experience working with high school/college-age students on their reading skills: i.e., literature, essays, history, textbooks, journalism, etc., teaching them and working intensively with them on effectively taking notes while reading, understanding and retaining key ideas in assigned reading/course material, critically analyzing literature for English/Humanities courses, etc. I have extensive experience in virtually every aspect of the curriculum and coursework (i.e., reading, assignments, etc.) in high school and college English, Writing and Humanities (e.g., History, Philosophy, Communication, Art History) courses and really enjoy working with adolescents and young adults one-on-one or in small groups.
